Essential Tax Prep Paperwork
Use this checklist to compile and submit all the necessary documents to complete your tax preparation and filing.
Individual Tax Filers
- Status changes that impacted you/your family over the tax year, such as birth, death or divorce (include dates)
- Changes in information, such as name change, change of address or new contact information
- W-2 forms (earnings/wages, gambling/lottery winnings)
- If overtime, last paystub of the year showing total overtime hours worked
- 1099 forms

- 1099 investment brokerage reporting statements
- 1099-B sales of investments
- 1099-C cancellation of debt
- 1099-DA sales of digital assets
- 1099-DIV dividends from investments
- 1099-G unemployment collected (access form online)
- 1099-INT interest from investment and bank accounts
- 1099-K payment card and third-party transactions (such as Ebay and Venmo)
- 1099-MISC miscellaneous income
- 1099-NEC non-employee compensation
- 1099-Q distributions from a 529 College Savings Plan
- 1099-R pension and IRA distributions
- 1099-S proceeds from real estate transactions
- 1099-SA distributions from health savings, medical savings and Medicare accounts
- SSA-1099 Social Security benefits
- Federal and state Schedule K-1s from investments in partnerships, LLCs or S-corporations
- Form 1098 mortgage interest statement for all primary, secondary and home equity loans
- Real estate taxes paid (if paid through mortgage, amount generally appears on Form 1098)
- Settlement statement/HUD 1 for any property refinanced, bought or sold during tax year
- Form 1098-E student loan interest paid
- Form 1098-T tuition paid for qualified higher education costs for taxpayers and dependents
- Year-end statement showing contributions to 529 College Savings Plan
- NJ residents only, year-end statements showing contributions to college savings accounts, principal and
- interest paid on student loans and/or tuition costs to attend NJ institution of higher education
- NYS residents only, copy of driver’s license
- Childcare expenses, including amounts paid and provider contact information and tax ID number
- Total amounts for cash and non-cash charitable donations (IRS requires supporting documentation)
- Medical expenses

- Hospital and lab fees
- Long-term care insurance premiums and supplemental medical insurance premiums
- Co-payments and deductibles
- HSA and FSA contributions
- Medical supplies and medical travel
- Amounts and dates of all quarterly federal/state/city estimated tax payments
- Total amount for IRA and/or SEP contributions made or to be made by tax deadline
- Documentation of expenses for energy-efficient improvements (invoices required)
- Documentation for purchases of electric vehicles and charging stations made by September 30, 2025
New Clients
- Copies of prior year federal and state income tax returns
- Full legal names, Social Security numbers, birth dates and occupations (taxpayers and all dependents)
Rental Property Owners
- For each property, total gross rental income and rental expenses by category

How to Submit Your Documents
- Please submit to us only when you have all documents necessary to complete your tax returns
- Include your phone number (required) and email address (if available)
